Road to Freedom – Paths of liberation

Telling stories, not just history. How PIO uses an authentic search for clues on World War II to bring the past to life for young generations and create lasting emotional connections.

2025 - 80 years of peace in Germany.

But how do you convey the path to achieving this as well as the liberation by the Allies in World War II to young people who no longer have any personal contact with this part of history?

The idea: two content creators, Leon Ziegler and Alex Müller-Perlefein aka Roofless Cat, spent eight days travelling along the historic route of the US Army - from Omaha Beach in Normandy to the liberation of Central Germany, a journey marked by encounters with the past that still shape the present.

Authentic historical communication and multimedia storytelling on Instagram, TikTok and YouTube create an emotional approach and teach young viewers the value of freedom and democracy - currently more important than ever.

The campaign is supported by a broad network - including the Capa House in Leipzig, US consulates as well as memorials and museums in France, Belgium and Germany. In addition, learning materials and flyers ensure that the campaign is firmly anchored in history lessons.

“I have gained a deeper understanding of history, of how cruel and inhumane wars are.” - Leon Ziegler
